So what is Web Development and why do you need it? Well, web development is a lot like building a sandcastle. It's all the stuff that supports your site. So it should be tight, firm, solid, well-constructed to stand the test of time and made of, er, sand.

This means that web development includes web design, server administration, looking after the content, programming, marketing, testing and so on. You'll sometimes hear web developers mutter something about the 'back end'.

Server administration

The back end is nothing to do with pantomime horses. Instead, this is the unglamorous part of web development. This is where a heavy metal fan, usually called Dave, in a grubby Motorhead t-shirt, sits in a dark room, deep inside some heavy programming or server-administration issue.

Usually, there's a range of specialists on the web development team. But they're almost always called Dave. Or Davina.

Websites and sandcastles have a few more things in common, too. Like we always eat ice-cream when we build them. Apart from that, the end result may not quite be what you first had in mind. That'll be because a funny thing happened along the way.

Your plan was precise, but you hadn't foreseen that the South wall would collapse. Or maybe you didn't realise that your new e-commerce application would need a different server configuration.
